SIXTEEN

G randpa had questions once Tillie was gone. Unfortunately for him, I had zero answers.

“I think she just likes hanging out,” I offered lamely as I waited for my order to come up. “She’s not doing anything illegal.”

Grandpa, his glasses perched low on his nose, gave me an “oh, yeah, right” look. “I’ve heard all the stories about that woman over the years,” he growled. “People say she grows pot.”

I waited.

“Pot,” he repeated.

“I’m familiar with pot,” I said finally.

The look he shot me promised retribution if he didn’t like my next answer. “You’d better not be messing with that stuff,” he warned. “I’ll disown you.”

Technically, he didn’t own me, but that was a conversation for another day. “First off, recreational pot is legal in Michigan now.”

“Since when?”

“Um, since a few elections ago. It passed on the ballot.”

“I didn’t know potheads voted.”

“Well, I don’t know what to tell you there.” This wasn’t the conversation I wanted to be having now. I already had enough to deal with—Grandpa getting a burr up his behind seemed like one catastrophe too many to field. “It’s legal. People can grow something like six plants if they want. It was all over the news. I don’t understand how you don’t know about this.”

“I only read the newspaper,” he growled. “I don’t watch television news. That’s not really news.”

“What is it?”

“Reality television.”

I worked my jaw. Oddly, given some of the cable news stations these days and the way they covered things, he had a point. “So, what were we talking about again?” I wanted to change the subject.

“Your little freaky friend,” Grandpa growled. “I don’t understand why she’s over here, two days in a row, no less. What is she up to?”

“I don’t think she’s up to anything.” That was a bald-faced lie. Tillie was definitely up to something. In this particular instance, however, I figured Grandpa would be happier in the dark. “I think she just likes hanging around with the cat.”

“Yeah, speaking of that.” Grandpa leaned forward, so I had no place to look but his face. His glasses looked like they were one stiff breeze away from falling from his nose, which was a regular occurrence. He refused to wear them on a chain—claimed that was what old ladies did—and they often ended up in the grease trap because of his vanity. “What’s with the cat?”

I was the picture of innocence as I held out my hands. “I have no idea what you mean.”

“You know.”

“I don’t. He’s just a cat. Krankle. I decided to name him Krankle.”

“That’s a stupid name for a cat but... whatever. I saw that cat out back right after your friend left. I swear it looked as if the old woman was having a conversation with him.”

Now we were treading on spring ice. “She’s an animal lover.” I opted to fudge the truth because the reality of the situation would send Grandpa into a tailspin—and not of the amusing variety. “She has a pig in Hemlock Cove. Its name is Peg.
